Home theater subwoofer circuit

This article is of design and construction of a 200W home theater subwoofer circuit. It is a simple but yet a powerful home theater subwoofer project you can construct.

If you have been searching for a circuit diagram or schematic of a project like this, then you have come to the right page.

The project outputs 200W total audio power output. The heart of the circuit is based on the power amplifier Integrated Circuit (IC) TDA7560.

The Integrated Circuit (IC) TA8268HS can also be used in place of the TDA7560. These ICs are quad inputs and outputs audio power amplifier IC. That is to say they have four (4) inputs and four (4) outputs channels.

  2. 50W speakers
  3. 10V – 12V DC single rail power supply

Construction

The two NPN Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) are configured in Common Emitter amplifier topology.

Circuit’s part based on the NPN C2383 BJT is the low audio frequency generator. This cut off any high pass audio frequency from the input signal into low frequency. Its output then fed via the coupling capacitor (220µF) to the input four (4) channel of the Integrated Circuit TDA7560 or TA8268HS (pin 14). The IC then from its channel four (4) amplifies the audio signal to 50W which drives the LOW (subwoofer or bass) speaker at pin 21 and 23.

The section which is base on the NPN C2655 BJT is responsible for high and mid frequencies filter which cuts off low frequencies from the input signal. Its output is hence fed to the inputs 1, 2, and 3 of the IC (pin 11, 12, and 15) via the coupling capacitor 10µF. The three channels each amplify the signal to 50W which drives the speakers at their outputs. (Pin 9 and 7 for the Right channel; 5 and 3 for the Centre channel; Pin 17 and 19 for the Left channel.)

The inputs and outputs of the Integrated Circuit (IC) TDA7560 or TA8268HS in this design, are use for these four inputs and outputs. These are: Right, Centre, Left, and Subwoofer. Each of these four outputs gives out 50W audio power each. When summed up, the circuits total output power is 200W (50×4=200).

Don’ts and Does

Don’t connect a low power speaker to any of the outputs of this circuit, it may SMOKE! Before connecting a speaker to any of the outputs of this circuit, make sure that it can handle the power this circuit can output. At least the speaker should be rated 50W and above.

The integrated circuit should be mounted on its heat sink because the IC will be heating up while operating. An artificial heat cooling system like applying a DC fan can be initiated for better cooling of the IC.

Powering the Project

This circuit can be powered by supply voltage ranging from 10V to 12V Direct Current (DC) single rail supply. Also, you can construct a 12V DC single rail power supply. Likewise, you can buy a ready 12V Direct Current (DC) adapter and use it to power the project. You can also use a 12V battery with at least charge rating of anything 1Ah and above for constructing or testing purpose.

Components Values
  • R1 and R5=1KΩ
  • R2 and R4=22KΩ
  • R3=22Ω
